Methodology: Serum Neutralization Assay

Reported: 6-9 days
Specimen Required: Collect:  One 6 mL serum separator tube or plain red.

Transport:  3 mL serum at 2-8°C. Also acceptable: CSF. (Min: 1 mL)  Submit specimen in an ARUP Standard Transport Tube.

Pediatric Collection/Transport:  0.25 mL serum at 2-8°C.

Remarks:  Separate serum from cells ASAP. Acute and convalescent specimens must be labeled as such; parallel testing is preferred and convalescent specimens must be received within 30 days from receipt of acute specimens. Please mark specimens plainly as "acute" or "convalescent."

Unacceptable Conditions:  Plasma.

Coxsackie B3: Less than 1:10

Coxsackie B6: Less than 1:10
Interpretive Data: Single positive antibody titers of greater than or equal to 1:80 may indicate past or current infection.  Seroconversion or an increase in titers between acute and convalescent sera of at least fourfold is considered strong evidence of current or recent infection.
Note: The clinical significance and criteria for interpretation of results from CSF have not been established.
