Legionella Species by PCR : 0056105

Mnemonic: LEGION PCR

Methodology: Polymerase Chain Reaction
Performed: Sun-Sat
Reported: 1-2 days
Specimen Required: Collect:  Respiratory specimen: sputum, lung washes, tracheal aspirates, nasopharyngeal swab, pleural fluid, bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL), bronchial brushings.  Specimen source is required.

Transport:  2 mL respiratory specimen in sterile container or in viral transport media (Microtest M4 or UTM) (ARUP supply #12884), frozen.

Submit specimen according to Biological Substance, Category B, shipping guidelines.

Pediatric Collection/Transport:  1 mL respiratory specimen, frozen.  (Less volume may decrease sensitivity of assay.)

Submit specimen according to Biological Substance, Category B, shipping guidelines.

Remarks:  CRITICAL FROZEN.  Separate samples must be submitted when multiple tests are ordered.  Avoid repeated freeze/thaw cycles.

Unacceptable Conditions:  Dry swabs and nonsterile or leaking containers. Respiratory aspirates in collection containers with tubing. Specimen tends to leak from these containers, compromising the specimen.

Stability:  Ambient: 4 hours; Refrigerated: 12 hours; Frozen: 6 months
Reference Interval:
Negative - Legionella sp. DNA not detected by PCR.
Positive - Legionella sp. DNA detected by PCR.
Interpretive Data: A negative result does not rule out the presence of PCR reaction inhibitors in the patient specimen or Legionella sp. DNA in concentrations below the level of detection of the assay.

This test is performed pursuant to an agreement with Roche Molecular Systems, Inc.

Please refer to Statement B in the Compliance Statements section in the front of the Laboratory Test Directory.
