Toxoplasma gondii by PCR : 0055591

Mnemonic: TOXOPCR

Methodology: Polymerase Chain Reaction
Performed: Tue, Fri
Reported: 1-5 days
Specimen Required: Collect:  One 7 mL plain red or serum separator tube, one 5 mL lavender (EDTA) or pink (K2 EDTA).  (Spin blood samples and remove serum or plasma before transporting), amniotic fluid, CSF, or biopsy tissue (freeze tissue immediately). Specimen source is required.

Transport:  1 mL serum, plasma, amniotic fluid, or CSF in a sterile container, frozen. Fresh tissue, snap frozen on dry ice.

Submit specimen according to Biological Substance, Category B, shipping guidelines.

Pediatric Collection/Transport:  0.25 mL serum, plasma, or CSF in a sterile container, frozen. Less volume may decrease the sensitivity of the assay.  Fresh tissue, snap frozen on dry ice.

Submit specimen according to Biological Substance, Category B, shipping guidelines.

Unacceptable Conditions:  Nonsterile or leaking containers.  Heparinized or hemolyzed samples.

Stability:  Ambient: 8 hours (excludes tissues); Refrigerated: 3 days (excludes tissues); Frozen: 3 months
Reference Interval:
Negative - Toxoplasma gondii DNA not detected by PCR.
Positive - Toxoplasma gondii DNA detected by PCR.
Interpretive Data: A negative result does not rule out the presence of PCR inhibitors in the patient specimen or Toxoplasma gondii DNA concentrations below the level of detection of the assay.

This test is performed pursuant to an agreement with Roche Molecular Systems, Inc.
