Borrelia species DNA Detection by PCR (Lyme Disease) : 0055570

Mnemonic: LYMEPCR

Methodology: Polymerase Chain Reaction
Performed: Mon, Wed, Fri
Reported: 1-4 days
Specimen Required: Collect:  CSF, synovial fluid, skin punch biopsy, one 5 mL lavender (EDTA), or one 7 mL plain red. Spin blood specimen and remove serum or plasma before transport. Freeze skin tissue immediately. Specimen source is required.

Transport:  1 mL CSF, synovial fluid, serum, or plasma in a sterile container, frozen.  Skin punch biopsy, snap frozen, and sent on dry ice.

Submit specimen according to Biological Substance, Category B, shipping guidelines.

Pediatric Collection/Transport:  0.25 mL CSF, synovial fluid, serum, or plasma, frozen.  (Less volume may decrease sensitivity of assay.)

Submit specimen according to Biological Substance, Category B, shipping guidelines.

Unacceptable Conditions:  Heparinized or severely lipemic specimens.  Nonsterile or leaking containers.  Frozen or clotted whole blood.

Stability:  Ambient: 8 hours (excludes tissue); Refrigerated: 3 days (excludes tissue); Frozen: 1 year
Reference Interval:
Negative - Borrelia species DNA not detected by PCR.
Positive - Borrelia species DNA detected by PCR.
Interpretive Data: A negative result does not rule out the presence of PCR inhibitors in the patient specimen or Borrelia species DNA concentrations below the level of detection of the assay.

Please refer to Statement B in the Compliance Statements section in the front of the Laboratory Test Directory.
