Specimen Required:  
Collect: CSF.

Transport: 3 mL CSF at 2-8°C. (Min: 0.4 mL)  Submit specimen in an ARUP Standard Transport Tube.

Pediatric Collection/Transport: 0.4 mL CSF at 2-8°C.

Remarks: CSF is the only acceptable specimen type.

Unacceptable Conditions: Contaminated and heat-inactivated specimens.

Stability: Ambient: 8 hours; Refrigerated: 2 weeks; Frozen: 1 year (avoid repeated freeze/thaw cycles)

Reference Interval:
Negative: No significant level of detectable T. solium IgG antibody.
Positive: IgG antibody to T. solium detected suggestive of current or past infection.

Interpretive Data:
The detection of antibodies to T. solium in cerebrospinal fluid may indicate central nervous system infection. However, consideration must be given to possible contamination by blood or transfer of serum antibodies across the blood-brain barrier.
