Mnemonic: KAP/LAM F

Methodology: Quantitative Nephelometry
Performed: Mon, Thu
Reported: 1-5 days
Specimen Required: Collect: Serum separator tube.

Specimen Preparation: Remove serum from cells ASAP or within 2 hours of collection. Transfer 2 mL serum to an ARUP Standard Transport Tube. (Min: 0.5 mL)

Unacceptable Conditions: Plasma. Room temperature specimens.

Stability (collection to initiation of testing): After separation from cells: Ambient: 2 hours; Refrigerated: 1 week; Frozen: 2 weeks
Reference Interval:

Test Number Components Reference Interval
Lambda Quantitative Free Light Chains, Serum 0.57-2.63 mg/dL
Kappa Quantitative Free Light Chains, Serum 0.33 - 1.94 mg/dL
Kappa/Lambda Free Light Chain Ratio, Serum 0.26-1.65

Note: This assay is highly sensitive to increasing concentrations of monoclonal free kappa or free lambda light chains in the serum of patients with evolving or relapsing myelomas.
