Specimen Required:  
Collect: One 4 mL SST.

Transport: 1 mL serum at 2-8°C. (Min: 0.5 mL). Submit specimen in an ARUP Standard Transport Tube.

Pediatric Collection/Transport: 0.1 mL serum at 2-8°C.

Remarks: Remove serum or plasma from cells ASAP. Acute and convalescent specimens must be labeled as such; parallel testing is preferred and convalescent specimens must be received within 30 days from receipt of the acute specimens. Please mark specimen plainly as "acute" or "convalescent."

Unacceptable Conditions: Contaminated or heat-inactivated specimens.

Stability: After separation from cells: Ambient: 2 days; Refrigerated: 2 weeks; Frozen 1 year

0.91-0.99 IV: Equivocal - Repeat testing in 10-14 days may be helpful.
1.00 IV or greater: Positive - IgG antibody to EBV viral capsid antigen detected, which may indicate a current or past EBV infection.
0051626Epstein-Barr Virus Antibody to Viral Capsid Antigen, IgA 0.79 U/mL or less: Negative - No significant level of detectable IgA antibody to EBV viral capsid antigen.
0.80 - 1.20 U/mL:  Equivocal - Repeat testing in 10-14 days may be helpful.
1.21 U/mL or greater: Positive - IgA antibody to EBV viral capsid antigen detected, which may be related to chronic or reactivated EBV infection.
