0051353: Epstein-Barr Virus by Quantitative PCR, Whole Blood

Test Mnemonic: EBV QNT WB
Methodology: Polymerase Chain Reaction

Performed: Sun-Sat

Reported: 1-4 days

Specimen Required:
Collect: One 5 mL lavender (EDTA) or pink (K2EDTA).  Specimen source is required.

Transport: 5 mL whole blood at 2-8°C.  (Min: 0.25 mL)

Submit specimen according to Biological Substance, Category B, shipping guidelines.

Pediatric Collection/Transport: 0.25 mL whole blood at 2-8°C.

Submit specimen according to Biological Substance, Category B, shipping guidelines.

Unacceptable Conditions: Heparinized or frozen specimens.

Stability: Ambient: 8 hours; Refrigerated: 3 days; Frozen: Unacceptable

Reference Interval:
390-39,000,000 EBV DNA copies/mL

Interpretive Data:
A negative result (less than 390 copies/mL or less than 2.6 log copies/mL) does not rule out the presence of PCR inhibitors in the patient specimen or EBV DNA nucleic acid in concentrations below the level of detection of the assay.  Inhibition may also lead to underestimation of viral quantitation.

This test is performed pursuant to an agreeement with Roche Molecular Systems, Inc.

Please refer to Statement A in the Compliance Statements section in the front of the Laboratory Test Directory.
