0051281: Norovirus Group 1 & 2 Detection by RT-PCR

Test Mnemonic: NORO PCR
Methodology: Reverse-Transcription Polymerase Chain Reaction

Performed: Tue, Fri

Reported: 5-7 days

Specimen Required:
Collect: Random stool in a clean, unpreserved transport vial (ARUP Supply #40910).

Transport: 1 mL stool, frozen.

Submit specimen according to Biological Substance, Category B, shipping guidelines.

Pediatric Collection/Transport: 0.5 mL stool, frozen.

Submit specimen according to Biological Substance, Category B, shipping guidelines.

Stability: Ambient: 8 hours; Refrigerated: 3 days; Frozen: 1 month

Reference Interval:

Test Number Components Reference Interval
Norovirus 1 by PCR Negative - Norovirus group 1 nucleic acid not detected by RT-PCR
Positive - Norovirus group 1 nucleic acid detected by RT-PCR
Norovirus 2 by PCR Negative - Norovirus group 2 nucleic acid not detected by RT-PCR
Positive - Norovirus group 2 nucleic acid detected by RT-PCR

Interpretive Data:
A negative result does not rule out the presence of PCR inhibitors in the patient specimen or Norovirus nucleic acid concentrations below the level of the detection of the assay.

This test is performed pursuant to an agreement with Roche Molecular Systems, Inc.
