Specimen Required:  
Collect: One 4 mL SST or plain red.

Transport: 0.5 mL serum at 2-8°C. (Min: 0.1 mL)  Submit specimen in an ARUP Standard Transport Tube.

Remarks: Separate serum from cells ASAP. Acute and convalescent specimens must be labeled as such; parallel testing is preferred and convalescent specimens must be received within 30 days from receipt of the acute specimens. Please mark specimen plainly as "acute" or "convalescent."

Unacceptable Conditions: Lipemic, hemolyzed, icteric, turbid, bacterially contaminated, or heat inactivated specimens.

Stability: After separation from cells: Ambient 2 days; Refrigerated: 2 weeks; Frozen: 1 year

Reference Interval:
1.39 IV or less: Negative - No significant level of C. pneumoniae IgM antibody detected.
1.40-1.50 IV: Equivocal - Questionable presence of C. pneumoniae IgM antibody detected.  Repeat testing is suggested after 2-4 weeks.
1.51 IV or greater: Positive - IgM antibodies to C. pneumoniae detected, which may suggest current or recent infection.

Interpretive Data:
Extensive crossreactivity exists between Chlamydia species.  Therefore, if the clinical diagnosis is unclear, IFA testing for all three species is recommended.
