Specimen Required:  
Collect: 5 mL CSF.

Transport: 3 mL CSF at 2-8°C. (Min: 0.5 mL)  Submit specimen in an ARUP Standard Transport Tube.

Pediatric Collection/Transport: 0.5 mL CSF at 2-8°C. (Min: 0.3 mL)

Remarks: Indicate source on test requisition. CSF is the only acceptable specimen type.

Unacceptable Conditions: Serum specimens. Contaminated or heat-inactivated specimens.

Stability: Ambient: 8 hours; Refrigerated: 2 weeks; Frozen 1 year

Reference Interval:
0.90 LI or less: Negative - C6 peptide antibody to B. burgdorferi not detected.
0.91 - 1.09 LI: Equivocal - Repeat testing in 10-14 days may be helpful.
1.10 LI or greater: Positive - C6 peptide antibody to B. burgdorferi detected.

Interpretive Data:
LI = Lyme Index

The detection of antibodies of Borrelia burgdorferi in CSF may indicate central nervous system infection.  However, consideration must be given to possible contamination by blood or transfer of serum antibodies across the blood-brain barrier.
