0050729: Hantavirus Antibody, IgG by ELISA

Test Mnemonic: HANTA G
Methodology: Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay

Performed: Mon, Thu

Reported: 1-6 days

Specimen Required:
Collect: One 4 mL SST.

Transport: 1 mL serum at 2-8°C.  (Min: 0.5 mL)  Submit specimen in an ARUP Standard Transport Tube.

Pediatric Collection/Transport: 0.1 mL serum at 2-8°C.

Remarks: Separate serum from cells ASAP.  Acute and convalescent specimens must be labeled as such; parallel testing is preferred and convalescent specimens must be received within 30 days from receipt of the acute specimens. Please mark specimen plainly as "acute" or "convalescent."

Unacceptable Conditions: Severely lipemic, contaminated, heat-inactivated, or hemolyzed specimens.

Stability: After separation from cells: Ambient: 2 days; Refrigerated: 2 weeks; Frozen: 1 year (avoid repeated freeze/thaw cycles)

Reference Interval:
0.89 IV or less: Negative - No significant level of hantavirus IgG antibody detected.
0.90-1.10 IV: Equivocal - Questionable presence of hantavirus IgG antibody detected.  Repeat testing in 10-14 days may be helpful.
1.11 IV or greater: Positive - Presence of IgG antibody to hantavirus detected, suggestive of a current or past infection.

Interpretive Data:
This ELISA screens for IgG antibodies recognizing the nucleocapsid protein common to all hantaviruses. There are two major groups of hantaviruses that are recognized based on clinical presentation. The first group includes Sin Nombre Virus, which causes hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, a severe and possibly fatal form of acute respiratory distress. A second group of hantaviruses (including Seoul, Hantaan, Dobrava, and Puumala viruses) causes hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome, a condition not typically seen in the United States. Further testing with confirmatory assays to detect antibodies specific for Sin Nombre Virus (by ELISA and Western blot) may be indicated if the test is equivocal or positive and the clinical diagnosis is unclear.
