Specimen Required:  
Collect: One 3 mL plain red, lavender (EDTA), pink (K2EDTA), green (sodium or lithium heparin), amniotic fluid, or cell-free tissue culture supernatant.  Submit sample in an ARUP Standard Transport Tube.

Transport: 1 mL serum, plasma, amniotic fluid, or cell-free tissue culture supernatant, frozen. (Min: 0.5 mL)

Pediatric Collection/Transport: 0.3 mL serum, plasma, or cell-free tissue culture supernatant, frozen.

Remarks: CRITICAL FROZEN.  Separate samples must be submitted when multiple tests are ordered. Separate serum, plasma, or fluid within 30 minutes from cells and freeze.  Avoid freeze/thaw cycles.

Unacceptable Conditions: Heat-inactivated, refrigerated, hemolyzed or contaminated samples.

Stability: After separation from cells: Ambient: 30 minutes; Refrigerated: Unacceptable; Frozen: 1 year

Note:
Like interleukin 6, interleukin 8 is a pro-inflammatory cytokine.  Elevated levels are observed in a variety of inflammatory processes, including infections and collagen vascular diseases.
