#ExistInterpData>Individuals infected with HSV may not exhibit detectable IgG antibody to type specific HSV antigens 1 and 2 in the early stages of infection. Detection of antibody presence in these cases may only be possible using a nontype-specific screening test. All results from this and other serologies must be correlated with clinical history, epidemiological data, and other data available to the attending physician in making the differentiation between HSV type 1 and HSV type 2.

| Note: |
Type-specific ELISA antibody tests for herpes simplex virus types 1 and 2 antibody, IgG are now available which use the same cloned antigens as in the immunoblot. Sensitivity and specificity for both the type-specific ELISA and immunoblot are similar. The ELISA assay is offered Sunday through Saturday. Refer to Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1 Glycoprotein G-Specific Antibody, IgG by ELISA (HerpeSelect®) (0050292) and Herpes Simplex Virus Type 2 Glycoprotein G-Specific Antibody, IgG by ELISA (HerpeSelect®) (0050294).
