Specimen Required:  
Collect: One 4 mL SST.

Transport: 1 mL serum, frozen. (Min: 0.5 mL)  Submit specimen in an ARUP Standard Transport Tube.

Pediatric Collection/Transport: 0.15 mL serum, frozen.

Remarks: CRITICAL FROZEN. Separate specimens must be submitted when multiple tests are ordered. Allow specimen to clot for one hour at ambient temperature. Separate serum from cells ASAP and freeze. Plasma is not recommended.

Unacceptable Conditions: Specimens left to clot at 2-8°C. Specimens exposed to repeated freeze/thaw cycles. Nonfrozen specimens.

Stability: After separation from cells: Ambient: 2 hours; Refrigerated: Unacceptable; Frozen: 2 weeks

Reference Interval:
1.0-4.0 mg/dL

Interpretive Data:
Decreased C2 levels may be associated with increased susceptibility to infection (especially pneumococcal infections), systemic lupus erythematosus-like disease, rashes, arthritis, nephritis, and with C1-Esterase deficiency.  Increased C2 levels are associated with the acute phase response.
