Methodology: Cytochemical Stain

Reported: Within 5 days
Specimen Required: Collect: Peripheral blood in lavender (EDTA), pink (K2EDTA), or green (sodium or lithium heparin). OR heparinized bone marrow aspirate. OR paraffin block.

Specimen Preparation: Peripheral Blood: Protect from light. Transport 1 mL whole blood AND six unfixed smears.
OR Bone Marrow: Protect from light.
Transport 0.5-1 mL heparinized aspirate AND six unfixed smears.
OR Paraffin
block: Protect from excessive heat. Transport block or 4 unstained paraffin slides cut at 4 microns.


Storage/Transport Temperature: All specimens: Room temperature.
Peripheral Blood:
Must be received within 24 hours of collection; testing must be performed within 48 hours of collection.
Paraffin
block: Ship in cooled containers during summer months.


Stability (collection to initiation of testing): Blood/Bone Marrow: Ambient: 24 hours
Paraffin Block:
Indefinitely
