Specimen Required: Collect:  Peripheral Blood: One 5 mL lavender (EDTA) or pink (K2EDTA), or one 7 mL green (sodium or lithium heparin); or Bone Marrow: 1 mL heparinized aspirate; or Paraffin: Block or four unstained paraffin slides cut at 4 microns.

Storage/Transport Temperature:  Peripheral Blood: 5 mL whole blood (EDTA or green, heparin) and six unfixed smears; Bone Marrow: 1 mL heparinized aspirate and six unfixed smears. Transport peripheral blood and bone marrow at 20-25°C.  Paraffin: Blocks and slides must be protected from excessive heat.  Ship in cooled containers during summer months.
Minimum volume required
: Peripheral Blood: 1 mL whole blood (EDTA or green heparin) and six well-prepared unfixed smears.  Bone Marrow: 0.5 to 1 mL heparinized aspirate and six well-prepared unfixed smears.  Paraffin: block or four unstained paraffin slides cut at 4 microns.  Transport peripheral blood and bone marrow at 20-25 Degrees C.  Paraffin: blocks and slides must be protected from excessive heat.  Ship in cooled containers during summer months.


Remarks:  Blood specimens must be received within 24 hours of collection; testing must be performed within 48 hours of collection. Protect from light.

Stability (collection to initiation of testing):  Blood/Bone marrow: Ambient: 24 hours; Paraffin: Indefinitely
