Collect: Peripheral Blood: One 5 mL lavender (EDTA) or pink (K2EDTA), or one 7 mL green (sodium or lithium heparin); Bone Marrow: 1 mL heparinized aspirate; Paraffin: block or four unstained paraffin slides cut at 4 microns.
Transport: Peripheral Blood: 5 mL whole blood (EDTA) or 7 mL whole blood (green, heparin) and six unfixed smears; Bone Marrow: 1 mL heparinized aspirate and six unfixed smears; transport peripheral blood and bone marrow at 20-25°C. Paraffin: must be protected from excessive heat; ship in cooled containers during summer months. Send Sunday-Thursday only. Pediatric Collection/Transport: Peripheral Blood: 1 mL whole blood (lavender, EDTA) and six unfixed smears, or 1 mL whole blood, (green, heparin) and six unfixed smears. Bone Marrow: 1 mL heparinized aspirate and 6 unfixed smears. Paraffin: Same as adult collection. Remarks: Samples must be received within 24 hours of collection; testing must be performed within 48 hours of collection. Unacceptable Conditions: Fixed smears. Stability: Blood/Bone marrow: Ambient: 24 hours; Paraffin: Indefinitely |
