Mnemonic: VTE

Methodology: Enzyme Immunoassay
Performed: Sun-Sat
Reported: Within 24 hours
Specimen Required: Collect:  One 3 mL lt. blue (3.2% sodium citrate).

Storage/Transport Temperature:  3 mL plasma at 20-25°C.  Specimen MUST be received in lab and run within four hours of draw.

Remarks:  Separate plasma from cells ASAP.

Unacceptable Conditions:  Serum.

Stability (collection to initiation of testing):  After separation from cells: Ambient: 4 hours; Refrigerated: Unacceptable; Frozen: Will accept specimen frozen up to 24 hours
Reference Interval:
Negative
Interpretive Data: This test is intended for use as one component of a clinical algorithm for determining the likelihood that an outpatient has venous thromboembolism (VTE). Patients with negative values are unlikely to have VTE; however, false negatives may occur more commonly in patients with cancer. Positive results are not useful due to the poor positive predictive value of the test.  This test is not currently available for inpatient testing due to low specificity. This test is not useful for diagnosing or following patients with DIC. The cutoff value is greater than or equal to 500 ng/mL.
CPT Code(s): 85380
