Mnemonic: HCVRPAN

Methodology: Qualitative Chemiluminescent Immunoassay/Qualitative Recombinant Immunoblot Assay
Performed: Wed-Sat
Reported: 1-4 days
Specimen Required: Collect: Serum separator tube.

Specimen Preparation: Separate serum from cells ASAP or within 2 hours of collection. Transfer 1 mL serum to an ARUP Standard Transport Tube. (Min: 0.5 mL) Also acceptable: K2EDTA plasma.

Storage/Transport Temperature: Refrigerated.

Submit specimen according to Biological Substance, Category B, shipping guidelines.

Unacceptable Conditions: Heparinized plasma. Specimens containing particulate material. Heat-inactivated, severely hemolyzed, or lipemic specimens.

Stability (collection to initiation of testing): After separation from cells: Ambient: Unacceptable; Refrigerated: 1 week; Frozen: Indefinitely (avoid repeated freeze/thaw cycles)
Reference Interval:

Test Number Components Reference Interval
2002483Hepatitis C Virus Antibody by CIA Negative
0020104Hepatitis C Virus Antibody (RIBA), Supplemental Negative

Interpretive Data: Negative: 0.79 IV or less
Equivocal: 0.80 to 0.99 IV
Low Positive: 1.00 to 10.99 IV
High Positive: 11.00 IV or greater
IV = S/C

This assay should not be used for blood donor screening, associated re-entry protocols, or for screening Human Cell, Tissues and Cellular and Tissue-Based Products (HCT/P).

Note: If anti-HCV screen is low-positive, then anti-HCV recombinant immunoblot (RIBA) will be added. Additional charges apply. For high-positive anti-HCV screening results, ARUP recommends collecting a new specimen and testing for Hepatitis C RNA by PCR or bDNA.
CPT Code(s): 86803 HCVAB; if reflexed, add 86804 HCVAB RIBA
