About ARUP Genetics

ARUP Laboratories is a national clinical and anatomic pathology reference laboratory offering in excess of 3,000 tests and test combinations, ranging from routine screening tests to highly esoteric molecular and genetic assays.  ARUP provides laboratory testing services to more than half of the nation’s university, teaching and children’s hospitals, as well as to regional hospital networks, multihospital groups, military and government facilities.

ARUP, an enterprise of the University of Utah, has a full-service genetics laboratory offering testing in molecular genetics, cytogenetics, biochemical genetics, and maternal serum screening with experience in sequencing, MLPA, fluorescence in-situ hybridization (FISH), microarray, and biochemical assays.  Most of the new test development taking place at ARUP is occurring within the Genetics Division, led by over 15 medical directors, all of whom hold faculty appointments at the University of Utah.  Our 8 genetic counselors are an integral part of our laboratory and serve as an invaluable resource to our clients and ordering health care providers (HCP).  ARUP’s genetic laboratory personnel, including our medical directors and genetic counselors, are available to answer your questions about test ordering, results interpretation, and logistical issues.

ARUP Genetics is committed to providing the highest quality service to help you deliver exceptional care to your patients.  Our priority is the patient.  We work with our clients to ensure that genetic testing is ordered appropriately; even if that means that we perform fewer tests.  ARUP’s team of genetic counselors routinely review all complex genetic test orders to ensure proper test utilization and will recommend test order modification when appropriate.  These efforts have helped our clients improve patient care by canceling duplicate, inappropriate and unnecessary tests; saving time, money and potentially preventing missed diagnoses.  Our routine review of complex test orders has proven to save clients thousands of dollars each month.  Working in partnership with the HCP, the ARUP genetic counselors discuss the clinical indication for testing along with any other pertinent information to ensure that the testing ordered will provide the information needed in the most cost-effective manner possible. This partnership ensures that the most clinically appropriate, and often less expensive, tests are performed.  For more information on our genetic testing review, please see “Value of Genetic Counselors in the Laboratory”.
