December 5, 2002 - U of U's ARUP Laboratories Rated Number
One In Nation, Outranks All Other Pathology Labs for Best Service:

SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH – December 5, 2002 In an independent national survey of laboratory managers, the University of Utah's ARUP Laboratories outranked such national notables as the Mayo Clinic for providing the best level of service among national reference laboratories.

The survey of 191 laboratory managers and administrators was conducted in October by the Washington G-2 Reports for the 20th Annual Lab Institute. ARUP Laboratories was named by 31 percent of respondents as the national esoteric testing facility that provides the best level of service. Mayo Laboratories, Rochester, Minn., ranked second with 26 percent, followed by Quest Diagnostics, Teterboro, N.J., received 21 percent and Specialty Laboratories, Santa Monica, Calif., and Laboratory Corp. of America, Burlington, N.C., each receiving 6 percent.

“We are very proud to receive national recognition in an important and challenging health care field,” says Carl R. Kjeldsberg, M.D., president and CEO of ARUP Laboratories and chair of the Department of Pathology at the University of Utah School of Medicine. “The enhanced national visibility this brings ARUP and the University of Utah helps us continue to attract good faculty, clinicians, scientists, and research grants.”

ARUP maintains a dual role as both a national reference laboratory and a full-service laboratory for the University of Utah Hospital and Clinics. A reference laboratory provides special pathology testing and diagnoses to help health care professionals treat their patients. ARUP is also integrated with the teaching and research mission of the Department of Pathology.

“ARUP's ability to bring teaching, research, and clinical work together has enabled us to develop and adopt cutting-edge methods,” according to Ronald L. Weiss, M.D., M.B.A., senior vice president of business development for ARUP. “For example, in the Lab Institute survey, 94 percent of laboratory professionals said they expect genomic and proteomic testing to dominate laboratories in the future. Research at ARUP is playing an important part in these advances.”

ARUP Laboratories is a national full-service reference laboratory owned by the University of Utah. ARUP is a worldwide leader in innovative laboratory research and development, led by the efforts of the ARUP Institute for Clinical and Experimental Pathology, LLC. With revenue of greater than $160 million and more than 1,300 employees, ARUP offers over 2,000 tests and test combinations, ranging from routine cytology screens to highly esoteric molecular and genetic assays. ARUP's clients include university teaching hospitals, multi-hospital groups, major commercial laboratories, group purchasing organizations, military and government facilities, major clinics, and major pharmaceutical firms.
