SALT LAKE CITY, August 10, 2010—ARUP Laboratories’ president and chief executive officer, Edward R. Ashwood, MD, recently received the Award for Outstanding Contributions to the Field of Pediatric and Maternal-Fetal Clinical Chemistry. The award was presented by the American Association of Clinical Chemistry’s (AACC) Pediatric and Maternal-Fetal Division at a mixer during the AACC annual meeting in Anaheim, Calif.
Dr. Ashwood has been with ARUP Laboratories for 25 years, serving in numerous capacities and leadership roles within the company. He has been a professor of pathology in the University of Utah’s Department of Pathology since 1997. He is also well-known as a co-editor for the Tietz Textbook of Clinical Chemistry and Molecular Diagnostics, Tietz Fundamentals of Clinical Chemistry, and Fundamentals of Molecular Diagnostics.
The Pediatric and Maternal-Fetal Division of the AACC honors one member each year based on contributions in areas that comprise the division’s goals and objectives, including education, communication, publication, research, and/or consultation.
“Dr. Ashwood has made many significant contributions to advance the field of pediatric and maternal-fetal lab medicine, as a thought-leader, educator, and pathologist,” said Nathalie Lepage, PhD, chair, Pediatric and Maternal-Fetal Division, AACC. “I have known Dr. Ashwood for nearly a decade and have been acquainted with his work since I was a postdoctoral student. I have always appreciated the high-quality scientific content and clear conclusions of his publications. He is well-known in the industry and was certainly an excellent choice for this award.”
Among his contributions to pediatric and maternal-fetal lab medicine, Dr. Ashwood has published more than 80 papers and given more than 140 invited lectures worldwide. Over the years, he has maintained a specific interest in amniotic fluid tests of fetal lung maturity and prenatal testing, publishing multiple studies characterizing the accuracy of serum bilirubin measurements while serving on the Chemistry Resource Committee of the College of American Pathologists (CAP).
