ARUP LABORATORIES AND MAYOR RALPH BECKER CELEBRATE MEDICAL LABORATORY PROFESSIONALS WEEK

SALT LAKE CITY, April 27, 2009—ARUP Laboratories, a national medical reference laboratory, is pleased to announce that Mayor Ralph Becker issued a proclamation declaring April 19–25, 2009, as Medical Laboratory Professionals Week in Salt Lake City. This week is observed nationally by medical laboratory professionals and recognizes the contributions of the scientific and technical personnel whose work in the clinical laboratory helps give our nation the best possible health care.

Medical Laboratory Professionals Week celebrates the professionalism of laboratory professionals and recognizes their efforts. Since laboratorians often work behind the scenes, few people know much about the critical testing they perform every day.

According to the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP), more than 10 billion laboratory tests are performed in the United States each year. Laboratory test results constitute a significant portion of a patient’s medical records. An estimated 50–80 percent of a physician’s decisions to the diagnosis and treatment of illness and disease is based on laboratory test results.

“The practice of modern medicine at the exacting standards we enjoy would be impossible without the scientific tests performed daily in the medical laboratory,” stated Mayor Becker. “The maintenance of these standards and progress toward improvement in the quality of laboratory services depends on the efforts of professional clinical laboratory science practitioners, which is why I am naming this week Medical Laboratory Professionals Week.”

The signing was attended by representatives of Salt Lake City medical laboratories, including:

  • Karen Brown, MS, MT (ASCP), professor of Medical Laboratory Science, Department of Pathology, University of Utah;
  • Sue Wade, MT(ASCP), MBA, director of laboratory services at St. Mark’s Hospital and president of the Utah Clinical Laboratory Management Association Chapter;
  • Michele Stuart, PhD, associate professor, academic advisor, and program recruiter of Medical Laboratory Science, Department of Pathology, University of Utah, past president of the American Society for Clinical Laboratory Science (Utah), and current American Society for Clinical Pathology Southwest Region representative; and
  • Ronald Weiss, MD, President and COO, ARUP Laboratories, immediate past chairman of the board of the American Clinical Laboratory Association (ACLA) and president of the American Pathology Foundation (APF).
