October 1, 2003 - ARUP Laboratories' Dr. Carl Kjeldsberg Appointed Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Ronald Weiss as President and Chief Operating Officer

SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH, October 1, 2003 - University of Utah President J. Bernard Machen, D.D.S., Ph.D., announced today the recent appointment of Carl R. Kjeldsberg, M.D., as chairman of the board and chief executive officer of the University-owned Associated Regional and University Pathologists, Inc. (ARUP Laboratories). Subsequent to Dr. Kjeldsberg's appointment, Ronald L. Weiss, M.D., M.B.A., was named president and chief operating officer of ARUP Laboratories.

Since 1993, Dr. Kjeldsberg has served as president and chief executive officer of ARUP, one of the largest clinical reference laboratories in the nation, as well as chairman of the Department of Pathology at the University of Utah School of Medicine. He is board certified in anatomic and clinical pathology with a subspecialty certification in hematology and received his M.D. from the University of Edinburgh in Scotland.

In his new position, Dr. Kjeldsberg will focus on maintaining ARUP's strategic relationship with the University, as well as with the community at large. He will retain responsibility for several divisions of ARUP, including Finance, Research and Development, Strategic Planning, Quality, Compliance, and Legal Affairs.

Now president and chief operating officer, Dr. Weiss most recently functioned as senior vice president and director of Business Development. From 1993 until 2002, he served as ARUP's chief medical officer and director of laboratories. A professor of pathology at the University's School of Medicine, Dr. Weiss is board certified in anatomic and clinical pathology, microbiology, and hematology. Dr. Weiss received his M.D. from Creighton University and his M.B.A. from the University of Utah. In his new capacity, Dr. Weiss will oversee the day-to-day operations of the laboratory, including Medical Affairs, Technical Operations, Information Technology, Business Development, and Human Resources.

Dr. Kjeldsberg's appointment follows the departure of Gary L. Crocker, a member of the board since 1999 and chairman since 2001.

"We are grateful for Gary's contributions and wish him well in his future endeavors," said President Machen. "Carl's appointment opens the door to many exciting opportunities and we believe his continued leadership will position ARUP for further growth and success."

ARUP Laboratories is a national full-service reference laboratory owned by the University of Utah. ARUP is a worldwide leader in innovative laboratory research and development, led by the efforts of the ARUP Institute for Clinical and Experimental Pathology, LLC. With revenue greater than $190 million and more than 1,500 employees, ARUP offers over 2,000 tests and test combinations, ranging from routine cytology screens to highly esoteric molecular and genetic assays. Rather than competing with its clients, ARUP chooses instead to support their existing test menus by offering highly complex and unique tests which enhance their abilities to provide local and regional laboratory services. ARUP's clients include university teaching hospitals, multihospital groups, major commercial laboratories, group purchasing organizations, military and government facilities, major clinics, and major pharmaceutical firms.
