Year Book of Medicine® 2009

The Year Book of Medicine 2009 contains abstracts of articles, selected from more than 500 journals, that reported the year's breakthrough developments in medicine. Expert contributors provide commentaries that evaluate the clinical importance and application of each article. Topics are organized into eight chapters: rheumatology; infectious diseases; hematology and oncology; kidney, water, and electrolytes; pulmonary disease; heart and cardiovascular disease; the digestive system; and endocrinology, diabetes, and metabolism.

A. Wayne Meikle, MD, professor of medicine and pathology at the University of Utah School of Medicine and medical director of Endocrinology & Automated Endocrinology laboratories at ARUP Laboratories, is one of the contributors to the endocrinology, diabetes, and metabolism section.

Dr. Meikle provides expert commentary in chapter 58, which deals with reproductive endocrinology. In reviewing the five articles in the chapter, Dr. Meikle discusses postmenopausal hormone replacement with estrogen and progestin; osteoporotic fractures in aging men and women; polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS); testosterone deficiency and therapy in aging men; and obesity’s role in fertility.

Dr. Meikle is also the editor of the reproductive endocrinology section of the Year Book of Endocrinology 2009.
