Wildcards Symbol (*)

The wildcard symbol (*) can be used in place of letters or characters in query words to search for different permutations of a word.

*	Can be in any position in the term and matches any number of characters.
Examples:	hemo*	matches hemolytic, hemophilia and hemophilia
	*NA	matches DNA and RNA
	*tet**	matches text and test
	BCL*	matches bcl-1/JH and bcl-2/JH
	virus*	matches virus or viruses
	*glucan*	matches beta-1,3-d-Glucan

Boolean Parameters

Search terms can be a single word or several words. The search engine automatically inserts and between words if nothing else is specified, so the Boolean term and can be omitted in search terms. For example, searching for tissue assay is the same as searching for tissue AND assay.

Quotes can be used to search for phrases. For example:

"tissue assay "

Words must be present in the specified order with no intervening words

The following boolean connectors can be used: AND, OR, NOT Examples:

tissue AND assay	Both words must be present
tissue OR assay	Either word can be present
assay NOT tissue	Only assay can be present, tissue cannot appear on the page

Order the Correct Test for Vitamin D Testing: ARUP's Guidelines

Ordering Vitamin D Tests

In the past year, ARUP Laboratories has experienced an increase in test volume for vitamin D testing. There has been some confusion regarding which test to order. The following are guidelines for ordering the vitamin D tests ARUP offers:

Vitamin D, 25-Hydroxy (ARUP Test Number 0080379)

This test is appropriate for assessment of vitamin D status, including general population screening for deficiency. It can also be used for assessment of hypocalcemia.
Chemiluminescence is preferred over the radioimmunoassay.

Vitamin D, 1,25-Dihydroxy (ARUP Test Number 0080385)

This test is primarily indicated during patient evaluations for hypercalcemia and renal failure. It should not be used to diagnose vitamin D deficiency.
Do not order this test in addition to Vitamin D, 25-Hydroxy for deficiency screening.
