Order the Correct Test for Vitamin D Testing: ARUP's Guidelines

Ordering Vitamin D Tests

In the past year, ARUP Laboratories has experienced an increase in test volume for vitamin D testing. There has been some confusion regarding which test to order. The following are guidelines for ordering the vitamin D tests ARUP offers:

Vitamin D, 25-Hydroxy (ARUP Test Number 0080379)

  • This test is appropriate for assessment of vitamin D status, including general population screening for deficiency. It can also be used for assessment of hypocalcemia.
  • Chemiluminescence is preferred over the radioimmunoassay.

Vitamin D, 1,25-Dihydroxy (ARUP Test Number 0080385)

  • This test is primarily indicated during patient evaluations for hypercalcemia and renal failure. It should not be used to diagnose vitamin D deficiency.
  • Do not order this test in addition to Vitamin D, 25-Hydroxy for deficiency screening.
