Dr. Hillyard on new developments in hepatitis testing

David Hillyard, MD, the medical director of the Molecular Hepatitis and Retrovirus and Molecular Infectious Diseases laboratories and the Molecular Infectious Diseases and Molecular Hepatitis/Retrovirus sections, as well as the Molecular Sequencing Section of the Molecular Pathology Laboratory, at ARUP, discusses new developments in hepatitis testing with Anne Ford in the April 2009 issue of CAP Today. According to Dr. Hillyard, there’s been a consistent progression of guidelines for hepatitis B across the NIH and the CDC, and among organizations such as the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases. Dr. Hillyard sees this as "an increased recognition of just how complicated chronic hepatitis B is."

  • HBV, of course, isn’t the only hepatitis virus whose testing protocols have needed clarification. Uncertainty surrounds testing for hepatitis C, too, particularly around the question of how well laboratories are heeding the CDC’s 2003 guidelines regarding HCV testing. See more
