ARUP Laboratories’ New Electronic Enhanced Laboratory Reporting System

With the upcoming November 2009 Hot Line, ARUP Laboratories will be releasing its new Electronic Enhanced Laboratory Reporting System, which will, for certain tests, supplement the current text-based reports. The enhanced reports are graphical PDF documents that can be downloaded directly over the internet by physician offices without affecting laboratories’ interfaces or otherwise impacting laboratory resources.

For certain tests, including Cytogenetics, ARUP currently provides supplemental reports containing graphs and images in the form of paper reports faxed and/or mailed to clients. In the future, these reports will be provided directly to physicians and their offices through this new electronic medium, streamlining the reporting process, decreasing errors, and eliminating paper waste. By eliminating paper and faxing, the new format is also more secure than traditional paper reporting, which reduces the risk of a HIPAA breach.

ARUP’s current SPEP and HIV Virtual Phenotype reports already utilize a similar reporting mechanism and will continue to do so. The new reporting format will allow ARUP to provide physician-friendly supplemental reports for a wide variety of test types without creating a burden for clients.

Benefits include:

  • Physician-friendly format to aid interpretation of complex test panels
  • Report downloads available to all providers and organizations who have access to the original lab results
  • Secure Web-based delivery
  • No resources wasted on paper handling or faxing
Beginning with the November Hot Line, all cytogenetic tests, including Genomic Microarray, UARRAY Chip and Chromosome Analysis, Bone Marrow, will be transmitted via enhanced reporting; clients will no longer receive paper copies of these reports. Other tests moving to enhanced reporting in the coming months include Osmotic Fragility, Erythrocyte; Incubated Osmotic Fragility; and HIV-1 Genotyping.
