Edward R. Ashwood, MD
President and CEO
Dr. Ashwood is the president and chief executive officer at ARUP and a professor of pathology at the University of Utah School of Medicine. Dr. Ashwood joined ARUP in 1985. He received his MD from the University of Colorado and completed a laboratory medicine residency in clinical pathology at the University of Washington. He is board certified in clinical and chemical pathology, and his research interests include the clinical chemistry of pregnancy. He is co-editor of the Tietz Textbook of Clinical Chemistry and Molecular Diagnostics, Tietz Fundamentals of Clinical Chemistry, and Fundamentals of Molecular Diagnostics.

David W. Bahler, MD, PhD
Medical Director, Hematologic Flow Cytometry Laboratory
Dr. Bahler is the medical director of the Hematologic Flow Cytometry Laboratory at ARUP and an associate professor of pathology at the University of Utah School of Medicine. He is certified by the American Board of Pathology in clinical pathology, with an added qualification in hematology. Dr. Bahler received his PhD in immunology and his MD from the University of Rochester.

Pinar Bayrak-Toydemir, MD, PhD
Associate Medical Director, Molecular Genetics Laboratory
Dr. Bayrak-Toydemir is the associate medical director of the Molecular Genetics Laboratory at ARUP and an assistant professor of pathology at the University of Utah School of Medicine. Dr. Bayrak-Toydemir received her MD from the Ankara University School of Medicine in Ankara, Turkey, where she also received her PhD in human genetics. Subsequently, she completed her fellowship in clinical molecular genetics at the University of Utah. She is board certified in medical genetics, and her research interests include fetal cell analysis in maternal blood and hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia.

Philip S. Bernard, MD
Medical Director, Molecular Pathology Laboratory
Dr. Bernard is the medical director of the Solid Tumor Molecular Diagnostics Laboratory at ARUP and an assistant professor of pathology at the University of Utah School of Medicine. As an investigator at the Huntsman Cancer Hospital, Dr. Bernard’s laboratory uses microarrays for a comprehensive genomics approach to developing molecular classifications for cancer. Dr. Bernard received his MD and postdoctoral training from the University of Utah and is certified in clinical pathology by the American Board of Pathology.

Robert C. Blaylock, MD

Medical Director, University of Utah Transfusion Services
Dr. Blaylock is the medical director of the Immunohematology Reference Laboratory, Blood Services, and Phlebotomy and Support Services at ARUP, and the Clinical Laboratory and Transfusion Services at the University of Utah Hospitals and Clinics. He is also an associate professor of pathology at the University of Utah School of Medicine. Dr. Blaylock received his MD from the University of Utah School of Medicine and is board certified in clinical pathology by the American Board of Pathology, with special certification in blood banking/transfusion medicine. Dr. Blaylock coauthored Practical Aspects of the Transfusion Service.

Arthur Brothman, PhD, FABMG, FACMG
Medical Director, Cytogenetics Laboratory
Dr. Brothman is a medical director of the Cytogenetics Laboratory at ARUP and professor of pediatrics and adjunct professor of human genetics and pathology at the University of Utah School of Medicine. He received a PhD and MS in genetics from the University of Arizona and is certified by the American Board of Medical Genetics, with a subspecialty in clinical cytogenetics.

Dr. Brothman served on the College of American Pathologists/American College of Medical Genetics Cytogenetics Resource Committee where he was charged with establishing a proficiency test for CGH microarrays. He has been active in the Southwest Oncology Group, the Children’s Oncology Group, and multiple peer-review committees through the National Institutes of Health and the American Cancer Society. Dr. Brothman was elected to the board of directors for the American Cytogenetics Conference and, among other national appointments, is a founding fellow of the American College of Medical Genetics.

Steven S. Chin, MD, PhD
Medical Director, Neuropathology
Dr. Chin is the medical director of Neuropathology for ARUP and an associate professor and director of Neuropathology for the University of Utah School of Medicine. Dr. Chin received his MD from New York University School of Medicine and his PhD from New York University, Department of Pharmacology. He performed his residency at Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center where he also completed a fellowship in neuropathology. Dr. Chin performs the Intraepidermal Nerve Fiber Density Analysis test for ARUP clients.

Frederic Clayton, MD
Director, Anatomic Pathology Autopsy Service
Dr. Clayton is the director of the Anatomic Pathology Autopsy Service at ARUP and an associate professor of pathology and autopsy director at the University of Utah School of Medicine. Dr. Clayton received his MD from Washington University in St. Louis and completed postgraduate training in anatomic pathology at Stanford University Hospital and in clinical pathology at the University of Utah. He also completed a fellowship in surgical pathology at the University of Minnesota Hospital and in anatomic pathology at Anderson Hospital. He is a member of the United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology. Dr. Clayton's recent work has focused on gastrointestinal pathology and the immunologic aspects of eosinophilic esophagitis.

Brian T. Collins, MD
Medical Director, Cytology Laboratory
Dr. Collins is the medical director of the Cytopathology Laboratory at ARUP and a professor of pathology at the University of Utah School of Medicine. As a cytopathologist, Dr. Collins is involved in clinical cytology practice which includes Pap tests, non-GYN cytology, and fine-needle aspiration. Dr. Collins received his MD from the University of Missouri-Kansas City and postdoctoral training from Indiana University. He is certified in anatomic and clinical pathology, with an added qualification in cytopathology by the American Board of Pathology.

Julio Delgado, MD, MS
Medical Director, Protein Immunology Laboratory
Dr. Delgado is the medical director of the Protein Immunology Laboratory at ARUP and an assistant professor of pathology at the University of Utah School of Medicine. Dr. Delgado received his MD from Universidad Industrial de Santander in Colombia and his MS degree in epidemiology from the Harvard School of Public Health, completing both his clinical residency training in clinical pathology and his research fellowship in immunology at the Harvard Medical School. He is board certified in clinical pathology and histocompatibility laboratory testing by the American Board of Pathology and the American Board of Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics. His research interests include immunity to infectious diseases and transplantation immunology.

David D. Eckels, PhD
Medical Director, Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics Laboratory
Medical Director, Molecular HLA Sequencing Laboratory
Dr. Eckels is the medical director of the Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics Laboratory and the Molecular HLA Sequencing Laboratory at ARUP, as well as a professor of pathology at the University of Utah School of Medicine. Dr. Eckels has more than 30 years of experience in the fields of histocompatibility, immunogenetics, and human immunology. He received his MS in microbiology and PhD in immunology from the University of California at Davis. He is a member and past president of the American Society for Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics and former board member for the United Network for Organ Sharing. Dr. Eckels is actively involved in NIH-funded research of infectious diseases and provides consultation to transplant laboratories in the United States and abroad.

Gary L. Ellis, DDS
Centers of Excellence Consultant, Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology
Dr. Ellis serves as a consultant for ARUP’s Centers of Excellence and is an adjunct professor of pathology at the University of Utah School of Medicine. Previously, Dr. Ellis served the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology, where he consulted for more than 24 years on thousands of cases pertaining to head and neck lesions. Dr. Ellis is board certified in oral and maxillofacial pathology and was the past director and president of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology. He is also the coauthor of Fascicle on Tumors of the Salivary Glands.

Lyska L. Emerson, MD
Staff Pathologist, Anatomic Pathology
Dr. Emerson is a staff pathologist consultant in the Anatomic Pathology Division of ARUP and an assistant professor of pathology at the University of Utah School of Medicine. Dr. Emerson received her MD from the University of Texas Health Sciences Center at Houston and served a residency in pathology at the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center and University of Texas at Houston. She completed her fellowship in general surgical pathology at the University of Utah School of Medicine. She is certified by the American Board of Pathology in anatomic pathology and is a member of the United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology, American Society of Clinical Pathology (fellow), and the Huntsman-Intermountain Cancer Care Program. Dr. Emerson's service work is predominantly in general surgical pathology, with a subspecialty interest in gastrointestinal pathology. Her research efforts are currently in the area of pancreatic-cancer research.

D. Glen Esplin, DVM, PhD
Medical Director, Animal Reference Pathology Laboratory
Dr. Esplin is an administrative vice president and medical director of the Animal Reference Pathology Laboratory at ARUP and an adjunct associate professor of pathology at the University of Utah School of Medicine. Dr. Esplin received his DVM. from the Colorado State University College of Veterinary Medicine, his PhD in experimental pathology from the University of Utah, and is board certified in veterinary pathology by the American College of Veterinary Pathologists.

Kael Fischer, PhD
Scientific Director, Pathogen Microarray Laboratory
Dr. Fischer is the scientific director of the Pathogen Microarray Laboratory at ARUP and a research assistant professor of pathology at the University of Utah School of Medicine. Dr. Fischer received his PhD in molecular and cell biology from the University of California at Berkeley where he was a Regents? Scholar. His scholarly emphasis is pathogen discovery in diseases of unknown etiology, viral evolution, and the effects of pathogen mutability on clinical testing and disease progression.

Mark A. Fisher, PhD, MS
Assistant Medical Director, Bacteriology Laboratory
Assistant medical director of ARUP's Bacteriology Laboratory, Dr. Fisher is also an assistant professor of pathology at the University of Utah School of Medicine. Dr. Fisher obtained a PhD in microbiology and molecular genetics from Emory University and his Master of Science in microbiology from Idaho State University. He subsequently completed fellowships in microbial pathogenesis at the Rocky Mountain Laboratories (NIH) and in medical microbiology at the University of Utah. He is board certified in medical microbiology, and his research interests include microbial pathogenesis and transmission of vector borne pathogens.

Kevin Flanigan, MD
Neuromuscular Pathologist, Anatomic Pathology
Dr. Flanigan is a neuromuscular pathologist at ARUP and an adjunct associate professor of anatomic pathology at the University of Utah School of Medicine. Dr. Flanigan received his MD from Rush Medical College of Rush University in Chicago and served as an intern at the University of Michigan Hospitals and as a resident and chief resident in neurology at Johns Hopkins Hospital. His fellowship training was in neuromuscular disease at Johns Hopkins Hospital and in molecular neurogenetics at the University of Utah School of Medicine. He is certified in neurology by the American Board of Psychiatry & Neurology and is a member of the American Academy of Neurology, World Muscle Society, American Neurological Association, and American Society of Human Genetics.

Elizabeth L. Frank, PhD
Medical Director, Analytic Biochemistry Laboratory
Dr. Frank is the medical director of the Analytic Biochemistry Laboratory at ARUP and an assistant professor of pathology at the University of Utah School of Medicine. Dr. Frank received her PhD from the University of Colorado at Boulder in organic chemistry and completed her clinical internship in pathology from the Penrose Hospital School of Medical Technology. Dr. Frank continued her training with a postdoctoral fellowship in pharmacy at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center and a postdoctoral fellowship in clinical chemistry at the University of Utah School of Medicine. Dr. Frank is certified in clinical chemistry by the American Board of Clinical Chemistry.

Katherine Geiersbach, MD, FCAP
Assistant Medical Director, Cytogenetics & Molecular Cytogenetics
Dr. Geiersbach is an assistant medical director of the Cytogenetics Laboratory at ARUP and a visiting instructor in the Department of Pathology at the University of Utah. Dr. Geiersbach received her MD from the University of Colorado School of Medicine and completed her residency in pathology at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center. She is a fellow of the College of American Pathologists and American Society for Clinical Pathology and an associate member of the Academy of Clinical Laboratory Physicians and Scientists. Dr. Geiersbach?s research interests include DNA-based genotyping of molar pregnancy, next-generation sequencing for the diagnosis of hereditary disorders, and molecular detection of malignancy using methylated DNA markers in peripheral blood.

David G. Grenache, PhD
Medical Director, Special Chemistry Laboratory
Dr. Grenache is the director of the Special Chemistry Laboratory and is a certified diplomate by the American Board of Clinical Chemistry. Dr. Grenache earned his PhD from Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Worcester, Massachusetts and completed a clinical chemistry fellowship at Washington University, St. Louis.

Kimberly E. Hanson, MD, MHS
Assistant Medical Director, Mycology Laboratory
Dr. Hanson is the assistant medical director of ARUP's Mycology Laboratory and an assistant professor of medicine and pathology at the University of Utah School of Medicine. She earned her MD from Northwestern University Medical School and her master of health science at Duke University Medical Center. Dr. Hanson completed her clinical training in medicine at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center and her infectious diseases and medical microbiology fellowships at Duke University. Prior to joining ARUP, Dr. Hanson worked as an associate in pathology and medicine at Duke University Medical Center and was associate director of the Duke Molecular Microbiology Laboratory. Her clinical and research interests focus on the diagnosis and management of infectious complications following transplantation. She is board certified in infectious disease, medical microbiology, and general internal medicine.

Charles D. Hawker, PhD, MBA, FACB
Scientific Director, Automation and Special Projects
Dr. Hawker is the scientific director of Automation and Special Projects for ARUP and an adjunct professor of pathology at the University of Utah School of Medicine. He is a past president of the Clinical Ligand Assay Society (CLAS) and the National Academy of Clinical Biochemistry (NACB), and received the NACB’s Professor Alvin Dubin Award in 2005 and the Association for Laboratory Automation’s Becton Dickinson Award in 2000. He is the current vice president (president elect) of the Association of Clinical Scientists. Prior to working in laboratory automation, Dr. Hawker was well known for having the first widely available radioimmunoassay for parathyroid hormone (PTH) in the United States. His laboratory also did the first research that lead to the discovery of procalcitonin and its role as a marker for septic shock.

Dr. Hawker is the coauthor of chapters on automation in the fourth edition of the Tietz Textbook of Clinical Chemistry and Molecular Diagnostics and the sixth edition of the Tietz Fundamentals of Clinical Chemistry. He has served on several automation committees for CLSI and HL7 and is a frequent lecturer on automation to national and international groups. Dr. Hawker received his PhD from the University of Pennsylvania and his MBA from Washington University, St. Louis.

Patrice K. Held, PhD

Dr. Held is the assistant medical director of the Biochemical Genetics Laboratory and the assistant medical director of the Newborn Screening Laboratory at ARUP. She is also an assistant professor at the University of Utah School of Medicine in the Department of Pathology. Dr. Held earned her PhD in molecular and medical genetics at Oregon Health and Science University in Portland, Oregon and is board certified in clinical biochemical genetics. She continued her training by completing the fellowship in biochemical genetics at the National Institutes of Health.

Harry R. Hill, MD

Medical Director, Immunology and Infectious Disease Laboratory
Dr. Hill is a senior technical vice president at ARUP, medical director of the Immunology and Infectious Disease Laboratory and of the Clinical Trials Special Testing Laboratory, and the executive manager of the ARUP Institute for Clinical and Experimental Pathology®. He is a professor of pathology, pediatrics, and medicine and the head of the Division of Clinical Pathology at the University of Utah School of Medicine. Dr. Hill is a diplomate of the American Board of Pediatrics and a member of the American Society of Clinical Pathologists, the Academy of Clinical Laboratory Physicians and Scientists, the American Society of Microbiology, the Infectious Disease Society of America, and the American Association of Immunology. Dr. Hill received his MD from the Baylor University College of Medicine.

David R. Hillyard, MD

Dr. Hillyard is the medical director of the Molecular Hepatitis and Retrovirus Laboratory, the Molecular Infectious Diseases Laboratory, and the Molecular Infectious Diseases Section, the Molecular Hepatitis/Retrovirus Section, and the Molecular Sequencing Section of the Molecular Pathology Laboratory at ARUP. He is also a professor of pathology, with an adjunct appointment in biology, at the University of Utah School of Medicine. Dr. Hillyard received his MD from the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. His training was in anatomic and clinical pathology, with fellowships in medical microbiology and microbial genetics.

Albert Ho, MD, PhD
Assistant Medical Director, Hematopathology Laboratory
Dr. Ho is an assistant medical director of Hematopathology Laboratory at ARUP and an instructor of pathology at the University of Utah School of Medicine. Dr. Ho received his MD and PhD degrees from Washington University in St. Louis, where he also completed residency training in anatomic and clinical pathology. He completed fellowships in surgical pathology at Washington University and hematopathology at the University of Utah, and is board certified in anatomic and clinical pathology with subspecialty certification in hematology.

Brian R. Jackson, MD, MS
Medical Director, Medical Informatics
Dr. Jackson is the medical director of Medical Informatics. He received his BA in mathematics and his MD and MS in medical informatics from the University of Utah, completing a clinical pathology residency at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center. Prior to his employment at ARUP, Dr. Jackson was a staff clinical pathologist and informaticist at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, a product manager for a Belgium-based medical software firm, and a National Library of Medicine Informatics fellow at the University of Utah. Dr. Jackson’s research interests include mathematical modeling of infectious disease transmission and studying physician utilization of laboratory tests. He is certified in clinical pathology by the American Board of Pathology.

Elke Jarboe, MD
Staff Pathologist, Cytopathology
Dr. Jarboe is a staff pathologist at ARUP and an assistant professor of pathology at the University of Utah School of Medicine. She received her MD from and completed her anatomic pathology residency training at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. Subsequently, she completed fellowships in women?s and perinatal pathology and cytopathology at Brigham and Women?s Hospital in Boston. Her primary subspecialty and research interest is in gynecologic pathology. Dr. Jarboe is a member of several professional societies, including the United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology, American Association for Cancer Research, American Society for Clinical Pathology, and College of American Pathologists.

Peter E. Jensen, MD
Chairman, Department of Pathology
Dr. Jensen is professor and chair of the Department of Pathology at the University of Utah. He received his MD from the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine and completed residency training in anatomic pathology at Washington University in St. Louis. Dr. Jensen was previously a professor and director of experimental pathology and director of clinical immunology in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at Emory University in Atlanta. His research is focused on various aspects of immunology, including antigen processing and presentation, immune regulation, and autoimmunity.

Kamisha Johnson-Davis, PhD, DABCC
Assistant Medical Director, Clinical Toxicology and Clinical Drug Abuse Testing Laboratories
Dr. Johnson-Davis is the assistant medical director of the Clinical Toxicology and Clinical Drug Abuse Testing laboratories at ARUP. Dr. Johnson-Davis received her PhD in pharmacology at the University of Utah and is board certified in clinical chemistry by the American Board of Clinical Chemistry. She completed her postdoctoral fellowship in clinical chemistry at the University of Utah, Department of Pathology, and was a postdoctoral research associate at the Center of Human Toxicology at the University of Utah. Dr. Johnson-Davis is a member of various professional societies, including the Academy of Clinical Laboratory Physicians and Scientists and the American Association for Clinical Chemistry.

Todd Kelley, MD
Assistant Medical Director, Hematopathology Laboratory
Dr. Kelley is an assistant medical director of the Hematopathology Laboratory at ARUP and an assistant professor in the Department of Pathology at the University of Utah. He received his MS in immunology and microbiology and his MD from the Ohio State University and completed fellowship training in hematopathology at the Cleveland Clinic. He is board certified in anatomic and clinical pathology by the American Board of Pathology with subspecialty certification in hematology. His research interests include the identification of novel diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers in leukemia and lymphoma.

Carl R. Kjeldsberg, MD
Chairman of the Board
Dr. Kjeldsberg is the chairman of the board at ARUP Laboratories and a professor of pathology and medicine at the University of Utah School of Medicine. He is a coauthor of Body Fluids and editor of Practical Diagnosis of Hematologic Disorders. Dr. Kjeldsberg is board certified in anatomic and clinical pathology, with a subspecialty certification in hematology, and a fellow of the American Society of Clinical Pathologists and the College of American Pathologists. He received his MD from the University of Edinburgh in Scotland.

Noriko Kusukawa, PhD
Vice President and Director, New Technology Assessment and Licensing
Dr. Kusukawa is a vice president and director of New Technology Assessment and Licensing at ARUP and an adjunct associate professor of pathology at the University of Utah School of Medicine. Her role at ARUP is to locate new cutting-edge technologies and organize collaborations with like-minded organizations, with the goal of bringing those technologies into the clinical laboratory setting. In addition to laboratory experience, Dr. Kusukawa has more than 15 years of business-develpoment experience. Prior to her position at ARUP, Dr. Kusukawa was a technical director of FMC Corporation, overseeing the research and development and quality departments. Dr. Kusukawa received her PhD from Kyoto University in Japan.

Lester J. Layfield, MD
Medical Director, Histology Laboratory, Gross Dissection, Surgical Pathology, FNA Service
Dr. Layfield is vice president of the Anatomic Pathology Division and the medical director of the Histology Laboratory. He is also the head of the Division of Anatomic Pathology and a professor of pathology at the University of Utah School of Medicine. He received his MD from the University of California, Los Angeles, including a chief residency in surgical pathology and cytopathology, and is certified by the American Board of Pathology in anatomic and clinical pathology, with subspecialty certification in cytopathology. Dr. Layfield is the primary author of Cytopathology of the Head and Neck and Cytopathology of Bone and Soft Tissue Tumors.

Christopher M. Lehman, MD
Assistant Medical Director, University Hospitals and Clinics Clinical Laboratory
Dr. Lehman is the assistant medical director of the University Hospitals and Clinics Clinical Laboratory, Phlebotomy and Support Services, and Transfusion Services, and an associate professor of pathology at the University of Utah School of Medicine. Dr. Lehman received his MD from the University of Utah and is board certified in clinical pathology, blood banking, and transfusion medicine by the American Board of Pathology. In addition to other memberships, Dr. Lehman is a member of the American Association of Blood Banks.

Christine M. Litwin, MD
Medical Director, Immunology Laboratories: Autoimmune, Protein, Microbial, and Cellular
Dr. Litwin is the associate medical director of the Immunology Laboratories and a professor of pathology at the University of Utah School of Medicine. Dr. Litwin received her MD from Washington University and is board certified in clinical and anatomic pathology by the American Board of Pathology.

Nicola Longo, MD, PhD
Co-Medical Director, Biochemical Genetics Laboratory
Dr. Longo is the co-medical director of the Biochemical Genetics Laboratory at ARUP and a professor of pediatrics and an associate professor of pathology at the University of Utah. Dr. Longo received his MD and PhD in molecular biology and pathology from the University of Parma Medical School in Italy and trained in medical and biochemical genetics at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. Dr. Longo is board certified in medical genetics and clinical biochemical genetics.

Elaine Lyon, PhD
Medical Director of Molecular Genetics and Assistant Director of Sequencing
Dr. Lyon is the medical director of the Molecular Genetics, the assistant medical director of Sequencing, and an associate professor of pathology at the University of Utah. She received her PhD in medical genetics from the University of Alabama at Birmingham and continued with fellowship training in clinical molecular genetics at the University of Utah. She is certified in clinical molecular genetics by the American Board of Medical Genetics.

Rong Mao, MD
Co-Medical Director of Molecular Genetics
Dr. Mao is the co-medical director of Molecular Genetics at ARUP and an assistant professor of pathology at the University of Utah School of Medicine. Dr. Mao received her MD from Capital University of Medicine in Beijing, China, and her MS in molecular pathology from Beijing Union Medical College. Dr. McGill is the associate laboratory director and director of contract research for the Animal Reference Pathology Laboratory and ARUP's technical vice president. He received his DVM from Oklahoma State University and his PhD in veterinary pathology from Texas A&M University. He is a diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Pathologists and is active in several national committees with the American Veterinary Medical Association and the American College of Veterinary Pathologists. Dr. McGill’s interests include veterinary cytology, anatomic pathology, clinical pathology, and endocrinology. He contributes monthly to Advances in Small Animal Medicine and Surgery.

Gwendolyn A. McMillin, PhD

Dr. Meikle is the medical director of the Endocrinology and Automated Endocrinology Laboratories and a professor of medicine, endocrinology, and pathology at the University of Utah School of Medicine. Dr. Meikle is a fellow of the American College of Physicians and the American College of Clinical Endocrinology, as well as a diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine. He is the associate editor of the reproductive endocrinology section of the Year Book of Endocrinology and editor of Endocrine Replacement Therapy in Clinical Practice. Dr. Meikle received his MD from the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine and is board certified in internal medicine, endocrinology, and metabolism.

Rodney R. Miles, MD, PhD

Dr. Miles is a medical director of the Hematopathology Laboratory at ARUP and an assistant professor of pathology at the University of Utah School of Medicine. Dr. Miles received his MD and a PhD in cell biology from the University of Nebraska. He is certified by the American Board of Pathology in anatomic and clinical pathology, with subspecialty certification in hematology. His research interests include biological subtypes of adult and pediatric non-Hodgkin lymphomas. Dr. Miles is a fellow of the College of American Pathologists and the American Society of Clinical Pathology and a member of the American Society of Hematology, the Society for Hematopathology, and the United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology.

Marzia Pasquali, PhD

Dr. Pasquali is the co-medical director of the Biochemical Genetics Laboratory, the chair of the CHILDx project, and the medical director of the Newborn Screening Laboratory. She is also an associate professor at the University of Utah School of Medicine and a clinical scientist in the area of newborn screening. Born and educated in Italy, Dr. Pasquali earned her degrees of Doctor in Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Technology and Pharmacy Doctor at the University of Parma School of Pharmacy. Dr. Pasquali trained in biochemical genetics at Emory University and later served as the codirector of the Biochemical Genetics Laboratory. Dr. Pasquali is board certified in Clinical Biochemical Genetics.

Sherrie L. Perkins, MD, PhD
Chief Medical Officer and Director of Laboratories
Dr. Perkins is the chief medical officer and director of laboratories at ARUP Laboratories and a professor of pathology at the University of Utah School of Medicine. Dr. Perkins held the C. Scott and Dorothy E. Watkins Endowed Chair honoring Ernst J. Eichwald, MD, at the University of Utah School of Medicine from 2002–2005. She has authored 47 book chapters and 120 referred manuscripts on hematopoietic diseases. Dr Perkins received her PhD in biochemistry from the University of Miami and her MD from Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. Dr. Perkins is certified in anatomic pathology with a special certification in hematology by the American Board of Pathology. She completed her postdoctoral work while holding the NASA Fellowship Award, National Institutes of Health Fellowship Award, and the American Cancer Society Clinical Oncology Fellowship. She is the lead central reviewer for the Children's Oncology Group non-Hodgkin lymphoma clinical trials.

Josef T. Prchal, MD
Medical Director, Special Genetics
Dr. Prchal is the medical director of the Special Genetics Laboratory at ARUP. His primary appointment is at the University of Utah in the Division of Hematology, Department of Internal Medicine. He received his medical education at Charles University and completed his internal medicine residency and hematology fellowship at the University of Toronto. Dr. Prchal was then a research fellow at City of Hope National Medical Center. He has had academic appointments at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and Baylor College of Medicine. Dr. Prchal is an expert in the areas of erythrocyte enzymology, polycythemias, hemoglobin variants, and thalassemias. His expertise in these areas provides strength for hematology testing in special genetics, molecular genetics, and molecular oncology.

William L. Roberts, MD, PhD

Dr. Roberts is the medical director of the Automated Core Laboratory at ARUP and a professor of pathology at the University of Utah School of Medicine. Dr. Roberts received his PhD in pharmacology and his MD from Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. He is certified in clinical and chemical pathology by the American Board of Pathology.

Alan L. Rockwood, PhD

Dr. Rockwood is the scientific director of the Mass Spectrometry Laboratory at ARUP, a clinical associate professor of pathology at the University of Utah School of Medicine, and an adjunct research collaborator for the Chemistry Department at Brigham Young University. He is a member of the American Association for Clinical Chemistry, American Society for Mass Spectrometry, and the Indian Society for Mass Spectrometry. Dr. Rockwood received his PhD in chemistry from Utah State University.

George M. Rodgers III, MD, PhD
Medical Director, Hemostasis and Thrombosis Laboratory
Dr. Rogers is the medical director of the Hemostasis and Thrombosis Laboratory and a professor of medicine and pathology at the University of Utah School of Medicine. Dr. Rogers received his PhD in pharmacology and his MD from the Tulane University School of Medicine. He is certified in internal medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine and in hematology by the American Board of Pathology. Dr. Rogers is the coeditor of Wintrobe’s Clinical Hematology.

Mohamed E. Salama, MD

Dr. Salama is the assistant medical director of hematopathology at ARUP and an assistant professor of pathology at the University of Utah School of Medicine. Dr. Salama received his MD from Cairo University and completed a hematopathology fellowship at the University of New Mexico and a surgical pathology fellowship at Stanford University. He is certified by the American Board of Pathology in anatomic pathology and hematopathology. His areas of interest span all aspects of hematopathology, including morphology and specialized studies of bone marrow and lymph node.

Wade Samowitz, MD
Staff Pathologist, Anatomic Pathology
Dr. Samowitz is a staff pathologist for the Anatomic Pathology Division at ARUP, with a special interest in microsatellite instability testing. He is a professor of pathology at the University of Utah, specializing in gastrointestinal and hepatic pathology. He received his BA from Cornell University and his MD from SUNY Downstate. Dr. Samowitz completed residency training in anatomic pathology at the University of Chicago and fellowships in gastrointestinal pathology at Johns Hopkins Hospital. Dr. Samowitz is board certified in anatomic pathology. His research interests are in the genetics and molecular epidemiology of colorectal neoplasia.

Rosemary She, MD
Assistant Medical Director, Virology Laboratory and Microbial Amplified Detection Laboratory
Dr. She is the assistant medical director of ARUP's Virology Laboratory and Microbial Amplified Detection Laboratory and an assistant professor of pathology at the University of Utah School of Medicine. Dr. She received her MD from University of California, San Diego School of Medicine. She performed her residency in pathology and fellowship in medical microbiology at the University of Utah School of Medicine and is board certified in anatomic and clinical pathology. Her research interests include diagnosis of respiratory viruses and genotyping of enteroviruses.

Shashirekha Shetty, PhD, FCCMG, FACMG
Medical Director, Cytogenetics
Dr. Shetty is the medical director of the Cytogenetics Laboratory at ARUP and an assistant professor in the Department of Pathology at the University of Utah School of Medicine. She received her PhD from the University of Mumbai in India and completed a cytogenetics fellowship at the University of Calgary in Calgary, Canada. She is a fellow of the Canadian College of Medical Geneticists as well as the American College of Medical Geneticists and the American Board of Medical Genetics. Most recently, Dr. Shetty?s research focused on the investigation of the use of mitogens to identify new cytogenetic prognostic markers in chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL); she is also interested in understanding the genetics of well-differentiated liposarcomas.

Ila Singh, MD, PhD

Dr. Singh is the associate medical director of the Hepatitis/Retrovirus Laboratories at ARUP Laboratories and an associate professor of pathology at the University of Utah School of Medicine. Dr. Singh earned her MD at the University of Bombay in India and her PhD at Yale University, and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Stanford University and a residency at Columbia University. Prior to joining ARUP, she was assistant professor at Columbia University and Director of clinical of laboratories at the Helen Hayes Hospital. She is board certified in clinical pathology by the American Board of Pathology, and her research interests include many aspects of retroviral and hepatitis C virus replication.

Patricia R. Slev, PhD

Dr. Slev is the medical director of the Serological Hepatitis/Retrovirus Laboratory at ARUP Laboratories and an assistant professor of pathology at the University of Utah School of Medicine. Dr. Slev earned her PhD in immunology and laboratory medicine from the University of Florida, Gainesville, and completed a fellowship in clinical chemistry at the University of Utah. Previously, she served as an assistant medical director at ARUP Laboratories in both the Special Chemistry and Serological Hepatitis/Retrovirus laboratories.

Kristi J. Smock, MD

Kristi J. Smock, MD Assistant Medical Director, Hemostasis/Thrombosis Laboratory Dr. Smock is the assistant medical director of the Hemostasis/Thrombosis Laboratory at ARUP and an assistant professor of pathology at the University of Utah School of Medicine. She received her MD from the University of Utah and completed residency training in anatomic and clinical pathology and fellowship training in hematopathology at the University of Utah. She is board certified by the American Board of Pathology in anatomic and clinical pathology, with subspecialty certification in hematology. She is a fellow of the College of American Pathologists and American Society for Clinical Pathology and is a member of several other professional organizations, including the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis. Dr. Smock has research interests in a variety of areas related to hemostasis/thrombosis. She previously served as assistant medical director of ARUP's Flow Cytometry Laboratory.

Sarah South, PhD
Medical Director, Cytogenetics, Molecular Cytogenetics, and Genetic Processing,
Dr. South is a medical director for the Cytogenetics, Molecular Cytogenetics, and Genetic Processing laboratories at ARUP and an assistant professor of pediatrics and adjunct professor of pathology at the University of Utah School of Medicine. Dr. South received her PhD from the John Hopkins School of Medicine in human genetics, and completed a postdoctoral research fellowship in prenatal genetics at the John Hopkins Hospital and a clinical cytogenetics fellowship at the University of Utah School of Medicine. She is the also the director of the ABMG-certified training program in clinical cytogenetics at the University of Utah. Dr. South regularly lectures for the genetic counseling and nursing programs and coordinates chromosome rounds for the Division of Medical Genetics at the University of Utah. Her research interests include the development of new technologies for enhanced detection and characterization of chromosome abnormalities.

Anne E. Tebo, PhD

Dr. Tebo is the assistant medical director of the Immunology Laboratory at ARUP and an assistant professor of pathology at the University of Utah School of Medicine. She received her PhD from the Eberhard Karls Universität Tübingen in Germany and completed post-doctoral training in immunology from the Department of Microbiology at the University of Birmingham at Alabama. Dr. Tebo continued her training with a clinical immunology fellowship at the Department of Pathology in the University of Utah School of Medicine and is a certified diplomate of the American Board of Medical Laboratory Immunology (ABMLI).

Harsh Thaker, MD, PhD
Head of Perinatal Pathology
Dr. Thaker is the head of perinatal pathology at ARUP and an associate professor of anatomic pathology at the University of Utah School of Medicine. Dr. Thaker completed his MD at the University of Bombay and his PhD in biology at Yale University. A current member of the Society for Pediatric Pathology, Dr. Thaker served a residency at New York Presbyterian Hospital?Columbia University in anatomic pathology. He was also a research fellow at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute at Stanford University. Prior to his arrival at ARUP, he spent eight years as an assistant professor of pathology at Columbia University, New York. He is now a staff pathologist at Primary Children's Hospital.

Karl V. Voelkerding, MD

Dr. Voelkerding is the medical director of the Advanced Technologies Group at ARUP and a past-president of the Association for Molecular Pathology. Dr. Voelkerding received his MD from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine and is certified by the American Board of Pathology in clinical pathology and by the American Board of Pathology and the American Board of Medical Genetics in molecular genetic pathology. Dr. Voelkerding’s research interests include the development of accessible new technologies in molecular diagnostics for the medical community.

Ronald L. Weiss, MD, MBA
Executive Vice President of Health Policy, External Affairs, and Corporate Communication
Dr. Weiss is the executive vice president of health policy, external affairs, and corporate communication at ARUP Laboratories. He served as ARUP’s chief medical officer and director of laboratories from 1993 until 2002, director of business development from 2002 until 2003, and president and chief operating officer from 2003 until 2009. Dr. Weiss is a professor of pathology at the University of Utah and is board certified in anatomic/clinical pathology, microbiology, and hematology by the American Board of Pathology. Dr. Weiss is past chairman of the board of the American Clinical Laboratory Association (ACLA) and president of the American Pathology Foundation (APF). He is a fellow of the College of American Pathologists (CAP) and the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP). Dr. Weiss received his MD from Creighton University and his MBA from the University of Utah.

Carl T. Wittwer, MD, PhD

Dr. Wittwer is a technical vice president and medical director of the Advanced Technology Group and the General Flow Cytometry Laboratory at ARUP and a professor of pathology at the University of Utah School of Medicine. He is an associate editor of Clinical Chemistry and is best known for developing techniques in rapid-cycle PCR and real-time PCR. Dr. Wittwer received his MD from the University of Michigan School of Medicine and his PhD in biochemistry from Utah State University. He is board certified in anatomic and clinical pathology by the American Board of Pathology.

Lily L. Wu, PhD

Dr. Wu is the medical director of the Reagent Production Laboratory at ARUP and a research professor of pathology, an adjunct associate professor of internal medicine, and director of the Biochemistry Laboratory for Cardiovascular Genetic Research in the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Utah School of Medicine. She received her MS in chemistry from Oregon State University and her PhD in biochemistry from the University of Utah.

Jia Xu, MD
Medical Director, Cytogenetics Laboratory
Dr. Xu is a medical director for the Cytogenetics Laboratory at ARUP and an assistant professor in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Utah. Dr. Xu received his MD degree at the Hunan Medical College in Changsha, China. He completed his cytogenetics training at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and holds a clinical cytogenetics certificate from the American Board of Medical Genetics. His recent research involved a project on the diagnosis of pediatric sarcomas using FISH probes; he has been involved in preparing a manuscript comparing FISH and PT-PCR for Ewing sarcoma samples. Dr. Xu is a member of the American Society of Human Genetics and has a board certification with the American Board of Medical Genetics.
